Let Us  Help You?

In June of 2006, our son sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). He spent 3 weeks at Golisano's Children Hospital at Strong in the PICU and then five weeks at Unity Health Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Unit at St. Mary's Campus in Rochester, N.Y.

Here he endured approximately three and a half hours of therapy each day before finally being discharged.  Our son then continued his therapy at an outside brain injury and rehabilitation facility three days a week for three hours each day. It was this incident that led me to become a strong advocate for our child. I was determined to help our son get the support he needed to help him with his rehabilitation and his transition back to school.

My husband and I have learned that in order to help our child to reach his full potential, we needed to be not only well informed but also actively involved. Our first priority was to request a parent/teacher conference each month to discuss our son’s ongoing progress

After learning how much time and effort was needed to navigate the medical and educational systems, my husband and I set up a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) foundation in February of 2008. We were determined that we would never allow the system to negatively impact our son’s recovery.

Instead, we learned to navigate the system and to obtain the services and supports that were necessary for our son’s rehabilitation.

It has been over three years since our son’s injury. Despite countless hours of research, training, networking, and meetings, my husband and I know that we have only just begun to carve out a path that will help our son realize his full potential. Although we have experienced success in our efforts to ensure that the school will provide our son with the support and strategies needed to help him succeed, we know that this is only the beginning of our journey.
